Someone asked for a list of books we recommended at the ministry conference this year… well, here it is friends, complete with descriptions. They are all great! Get ‘em all!!
An All Around Ministry by Charles Spurgeon
Full of practical insight and biblical wisdom, this book is a collection of the Presidential Addresses Spurgeon gave to the student body at the Pastors’ College. The truths in this book are applicable to everyone who wishes to serve the Lord effectively.
Lectures To My Students by Charles Spurgeon
A must read for anyone serious about serving Jesus. It has been perhaps the single most impactful book on me as a minister.
Only A Prayer Meeting by Charles Spurgeon
Spurgeon’s ministry was famous for its prayer meetings, which he considered to be the heartbeat and power supply of the church. This book contains the famous pastor’s addresses from midweek prayer meetings as well as some of His Sunday sermons on the topic of prayer.
Preaching and Preachers by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones
If you are at all interested in the topic this is simply the best book to own.
Spiritual Leadership by J. Oswald Sanders
Sanders has written the most practical and accessible book on leadership. His gift for brevity is astounding. Sanders manages to say more important things for the Christian leader than other authors have been able to say in volumes. An easy, quick, useful read, I read it often.
Fresh Wind, Fresh Fire by Jim Cymbala
This book changed the entire course of ministry at Reality as it pertains to prayer. This is required reading for anyone who wants to serve. Prayer changes things… just read the book.
Let The Nations Be Glad by John Piper
An awesome work that clarifies the reason we do missions—The glory of God. The third sentence of the book says it all: “Missions exist because worship doesn’t.”
The Supremacy of God In Preaching by John Piper
Once again John Piper sets our hearts and eyes right where they should be when we do ministry—on the glory of God!
The Lost Art of Disciple Making by Leroy Eims
Every Christian is called to make disciples. I am so thankful for this book that takes the fear and mystery out of it and provides encouraging, simple help for fulfilling the great commission. Please read it.
Ministry in the Image of God by Stephen Seamands
This is my absolute favorite modern book about ministry, and should be read by every Christian.
Systematic Theology by Wayne Grudem
Theology is important. Wayne Grudem has made studying it easy and engaging. One of the most profound theologians of our time has written a book that is conversational in tone and thorough in content. I do not agree with all of Grudem’s conclusions, but I do think this is the best work on theology for the beginning student.
The Bible Knowledge Commentary by Walvoord and Zuck
The only commentary I use every time I study. Brief and insightful this set helps you understand the context and meaning of the whole text of the Bible. Simply a must own.
Grasping God’s Word: A Hands-On Approach to Reading, Interpreting, and Applying the Bible by J. Scott Duvall and J. Daniel Hayes
This book is a great introduction to studying and interpreting the Bible. It is crafted like a textbook with huge margins for note taking as well as helpful questions at the end of each chapter. Having good books to help you understand and study God’s word for yourself is invaluable.
